Roof insurance claims, explained

A storm hit, and now you’re dealing with a damaged roof and an insurance company. We’ll walk you through it in plain language, from the free inspection to the finished roof.

The basics

How roof claims work in Texas

Most Texas homeowner policies cover sudden damage from wind, hail, and hurricanes. Those are the storms that hit the Houston area and the Gulf Coast most often, and they can damage a roof even when you can’t see it from the ground.

When you file a claim, your insurance company sends an adjuster to inspect the damage. The adjuster writes an estimate, and the insurance company decides what it will pay, minus your deductible.

Policies don’t cover normal wear and tear, so good documentation matters. The clearer the record of storm damage, the easier it is for the adjuster to see what happened.

What to look for

Signs of storm damage

Stay off the roof. These are things you can often spot from the ground or inside your home.

  • Missing or lifted shingles

Bare spots, shingles that flap in the wind, or pieces in your yard after a storm.

  • Granule loss

Dark patches on the roof or a gritty, sand-like buildup in your gutters and downspouts.

  • Dents in vents and metal

Hail leaves dents in roof vents, gutters, downspouts, and AC units that you can often spot from the ground.

  • Water stains on ceilings

Brown spots or bubbling paint on ceilings and upper walls can mean water is getting in.

Insurance FAQ

Questions about your claim

Will filing a claim raise my insurance rates?

It depends on your insurance company and your policy. Storm and weather claims are generally treated differently from other claims, but only your insurance agent can tell you how a claim will affect your premium. Ask them before you file if you are worried.

How long do I have to file a claim?

Every policy sets its own deadline, and many Texas policies require wind and hail claims to be filed within one year of the storm. Check your policy or call your agent, and report damage as soon as you can. Waiting can also let a small leak turn into bigger damage.

What is a deductible?

Your deductible is the part of the repair cost you pay before insurance pays the rest. Many Texas homeowner policies use a percentage deductible for wind and hail, such as 1% or 2% of your home’s insured value. Texas law requires the homeowner to pay the deductible, and a contractor cannot waive or cover it.

What if my claim is denied or underpaid?

You can ask your insurance company to explain the decision in writing and request a re-inspection. We can provide additional photos and documentation of the damage we found. For a formal dispute, you may want to talk with a licensed public adjuster or an attorney.

Do I need to be home for the adjuster?

It is a good idea, especially if there is interior damage to show. We can meet the adjuster on the roof either way, so the roof damage gets pointed out in person.

Please note: Ryan Roofing and Restoration is a roofing contractor. We are not public adjusters, we do not negotiate claims on your behalf, and we do not provide legal advice. Coverage and payment decisions are made by your insurance company.
